Jackie Lawrence joins the emergency Mobile Canteen Corps to fill in time until she is old enough to join the W.A.A.F. and is immediately in the thick of the London Blitz.  Bombs dropping, London on fire, buildings collapsing, ack-ack gunfire.  And in the middle of it all, Jackie and the other volunteers drive to the London Docks, to barrage balloon sites, to bomb shelters and to railway stations overflowing with troop trains, and serve tea and cake.  ‘Ordinary’ sorts of women, keeping calm and carrying on.
The accounts of the raw heat of the London Blitz are drawn from the author’s own experiences while serving with one of the voluntary canteen services.
